Five Games That Are Successful in the Casual, But ‘failed’ in the Competitive

Esports are a phenomenon all over the world. Game tournaments like Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), League of Legends (LoL) and DotA 2 are successful, distribute millionaire prizes and beat audience records. However, some famous games among casual players failed to emerge in the competitive. The consecrated Call of Duty and Pokémon franchises, for example, tried to enter the universe of competitions and did not have the expected result. Check out three examples of consecrated games that did not reach success in the esports.

Call of Duty
Distributed by Activision, the Call of Duty franchise is among the bestselling games in history. The series marked the epoch and dictated trend among the FPS, mainly for its popularity in the consoles. CoD offers several game modes and weapons, with great possibility of customization of movesets. It was also the series that introduced the killstreaks in online multiplayer games, a tool replicated in several other games.

With high-award-winning tournaments organized by Activision itself, CoD had everything to fill the gap of a great competitive FPS on the consoles, since games like CS: GO and Rainbow Six: Siege have their main tournaments based on the PC platform. However, the lack of stability caused by the annual launch of an entirely new game makes it difficult to build a competitive landscape. In addition, the game community remained largely localized in North America, lacking internationalization. As proof, all of the top 20 players with CoD tournaments are Americans, with Damon “Karma” Barlow, the first on the list, being Canadian, and all other Americans.

Battlefield 1

Battlefield is one of the largest series distributed by EA. As the main competitor of Call of Duty, BF is also very successful with its annual releases. With games that portray both the two world wars and hypothetical modern wars, the franchise draws attention to graphic and destructive maps. Available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, the game often ranks among the top ten best sellers of the year.
Madden NFL 19

Produced by EA Sports, Madden NFL represents well the sensation of playing the American sport, being a sales success year after year among fans of the game. Despite this, the game does not repeat success in its competitive landscape.

Although popular, the game had few tournaments. Because it is an NFL simulator, the game has its success leveraged by the traditional sports season, but it can´t become an independent electronic sport. For example, the version that most distributed money in awards, the Madden NFL 2017, only had five official tournaments throughout the current year of the game, not being enough for a player to dedicate himself professionally.
